Some Wonderful Talks and a Face-to-Face Broadcast

 I have been trying to do a single video and therefore a single blog post for each talk or special event that I listen to or read. However, this has not been working. I don't even get through the blog part, much less create a video. So I am going to try to do one video or blog for what have have read or experienced this week.

This is what I have seen in the order of the power or influence I felt as I read or watch.

Moving Forward by President Russell M. Nelson

 

"How grateful we are for the technology that allows us to be connected as one great worldwide gathering of disciples of Jesus Christ."

These words catch my attention because I feel very grateful for the modern day in which I live and the wonders I enjoy, including being able to share this blog/video.

"Unusual times can bring unusual rewards."

I wonder what "unusual rewards" are in store for me because of these "unusual times".

"I pray that you will choose to lay hold upon the word of God as it is declared during this general conference.

Creating this blog/video is part of my effort to "choose to lay hold upon the word of God as it [was] declared during [the] general conference."

Let God Prevail by President Russell M. Nelson

"Are you willing to let God prevail in you life? Are you willing to let God be the most important influence in you life?"

I have memorize this quote both and English and in Spanish. I am trying to make a concerted effort "to let God prevail in [my] life" and to "let God be the most important influence in [my] life."

"For a small moment have I forsaken thee [Israel]; but with great mercies will I gather thee."

This quote from Isaiah 54:7 touched me. I feel like the Savior is gathering me. 

"God does not love one race more than another. His doctrine on this matter is clear. He invites all to come unto Him, 'black and white, bond and free, male and female.'"

"I grieve that our Black brothers and sisters in the world over are enduring the pains of racism and prejudice. Today I call upon our members everywhere to lead out in abandoning attitudes and actions of  prejudice. I plead with you to promote respect for all of God's children.

This seems so appropriate in the world right now. Years ago I was talking with a brother in our elders quorum from Africa. He was deeply troubled by how the scriptures, including the Book of Mormon, referred to the darkness of skin as a curse from God. I didn't have the answers he needed. As I have read the scriptures since that time, I have tried to understand this as I read the scriptures. I hope he obtained the understand he desperately want and can now feel more clearly God's love for him.

"If you have sincere questions about the gospel or the Church, as you choose to let God prevail, you will be led to find and understand the absolute, eternal truths that will guide your life and help you stay firmly on the covenant path."

I can have questions, but my questions need to be "sincere questions" and not excuses.

"... make a list of all that the Lord has promised He will do for covenant Israel. I think you will be astounded."

This is not as easy to do as one might think. I have not yet learned to look for what "the Lord has promised He will do for covenant Israel." 

A New Normal by Russell M. Nelson

"I invite you to turn your heart, mind, and soul increasingly to our Heavenly Father and His Son, Jesus Christ.

I am trying to "to turn [my] heart, mind, and soul increasingly to [my] Heavenly Father and His Son, Jesus Christ" but it is not as easy as one might think. Hopefully over time this will become a gift and a strength.

"The challenge for you and me is to make certain that each of us will achieve his or her divine potential."

What is my "divine potential"?

"I bless you to be filled with the peace of the Lord Jesus Christ. His peace is beyond all mortal understanding. I bless you with an increased desire and ability to obey the laws of God. I promise that as you do, you will be showered with blessings, including greater courage, increased personal revelation, sweeter harmony in your homes, and joy even amid uncertainty."

These are truly great blessing from a prophet of the Lord.

Becoming Like Him, by Elder Scott D. Whiting

"Elder Neal A. Maxwell taught: 'As we ponder having been commanded by Jesus to become like Him, we see that our present circumstance is one in which we are not necessarily wicked, but, rather, is one in which we are so half-hearted and so lacking in enthusiasm for His cause --- which is our cause, too! We extol but seldom emulate Him.'"

 

As a youth I remember going to Salt Lake City to hear Elder Maxwell speak to the youth. This was before he became an apostle. He past away in 2004. 

How can I avoid being "half-hearted" and "lacking in enthusiasm"?

"Truly, there is no other way to heal the wounds of broken relationships or of a fractured society than for each of us to more fully emulate the Prince of Peace."

There seem to be so many "wounds" and so much of our society "fractured", it seems hard to believe that it is possible to "heal the wounds" of our "fractured society."

"...it is vital that we also ask our loving Heavenly Father what we are in need of and where we should focus our efforts. He has a perfect view of us and will lovingly show us our weakness."

Originally I didn't think this talk applied to me. However, as I read it again I realized that it did and that the attribute I have chosen is faith.

 "Our entire mortal experience is about progression, trying, failing, and succeeding."

...

"You are good enough, you are loved, but that does not mean that you are yet complete." 

I find this comforting especially the "failing, and succeeding" and "you are good enough" part.

Come, Follow Me, Book of Mormon Study

Also today I gained some insight into the complexity of the Book of Mormon while reading Ether chapter 12. I realized that there are eight different stories discussing faith in this chapter that are taken directly from the Book of Mormon. To me it would have been impossible for Joseph Smith to have created such an intricate story, weaving in on the fly these eight different Book of Mormon examples of faith, without notes or detailed preparation. Given how both Joseph and Hyrum found comfort in the book and in sharing their testimony of the Book of Mormon with others right before their deaths, it is inconceivable that it is a fabrication. See Safety for the Soul by Jeffrey R. Holland. What is also interesting to me is that Hyrum is quoting from this same chapter in Ether, verses 37 and 38. An amazing book and an amazing dying testimony. It is still astounding even after studying the Book of Mormon and the teaching of Joseph Smith for nearly 50 years.

Let God Prevail

Read a wonderful talk today by President Russell M. Nelson entitled, Let God Prevail.

I will liken this talk unto myself, that I might learn more spiritual and intellectually from Elder Nelson's talk.

President Nelson has studied intently the gathering of Israel for more than 36 years and recently learned something new related to the name Israel. From two Hebrew scholars he learned that one the Hebraic meanings of the word Israel 'let God prevail.'

"[Am I] willing to let God prevail in [my] life? [Am I] willing to let God be the most important influence in [my] life?"

Stan Learns the Gospel: Saturday, October 31, 2029

Welcome to Stan Learns the Gospel and by gospel I mean the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Today I read and listened to a talk from the 2020 October General Conference of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I believe I have listened to the talk before, but today when I started to read it, the Spirit touched my heart and I realized the talk is a gift from God personally to me. I was able to liken much of the talk to myself and hope I can share that experience with you.

Keep the Change

The name of the talk is Keep the Change by Becky Craven, the second counselor in the Young Women's General Presidency. 

I am going to talk about the things I have learned or that have been strengthened and brought into focus by studying this talk. Probably 99% of the words are hers; I am simply likening them to myself. See 1 Nephi 19:23.

"Through Jesus Christ, [I am] given the strength to make lasting changes. As [I] humbly turn to Him, He will increase [my] capacity to change."

"He created the heavens, the earth, and all the beauty [I] enjoy. Through His loving Atonement, He provides a way for [me] to be redeemed from sin and death. As [I] show [my] gratitude to Him by living His commandments, He immediately blesses [me], leaving [me] always in His debt." See Mosiah 3:5-12.

"He gives [me] much, much more than the value of what [I] can ever return to Him. So, what can [I] give to Him, who paid the incalculable price for [my] sins? [I] can give Him [my] change. It may be a change of thought, a change in habit, or a change in the direction [I am] headed. In return for His priceless payment for [me], the Lord asks [me] for a change of heart. The change He requests from [me] is not for His benefit but for [mine]. So, unlike the purchaser at the market who would take back the change [I] offer, [my] gracious Savior beckons [me] to keep the change."

"'True conversion depends on seeking freely in faith, with great effort and some pain. Then it is the Lord who can grant … the miracle of cleansing and change.'" See We Must Raise Our Sights.  "Combining [my] effort with the Savior's ability to change [me], [I] become new [creature]."

"Jesus Christ has given [me] a continuous pattern for change. He invites [me] to exercise faith in Him, which inspires [me] to repent—'which faith and repentance bringeth a change of heart.'" See Helaman 15:7. "As [I] repent and turn [my heart] to Him, [I] gain a greater desire to make and live sacred covenants. [I] endure to the end by continuing to apply these principles throughout [my life] and inviting the Lord to change [me]. Enduring to the end means changing to the end. I now understand that I am not starting over with each failed attempt, but that with each try, I am continuing my process of change."

This is very powerful to me as I struggle to change to be a better husband, father, grandfather, son, brother and uncle.

"'I cherish the gift of repentance and seek to improve each day.' See Young Women theme. "I pray that [I] do cherish this beautiful gift and that [I am] intentional in seeking change. ... [I] strive to refine [my] character to align [myself] with the attributes of Jesus Christ. [My] daily choices will either help or hinder [my] progress. Small but steady, deliberate changes will help [me] improve. [I will] not become discouraged. Change is a lifelong process. I am grateful that in [my] struggles to change, the Lord is patient with [me]."

It is hard for me to comprehend such patience, mercy and love.

"Through Jesus Christ, [I am] given the strength to make lasting changes. As [I] humbly turn to Him, He will increase [my] capacity to change."

"In addition to the transforming power of [my] Savior's Atonement, the Holy Ghost will support and guide [me] as [I] put forth [my] effort. He can even help [me] know what changes [I] need to make. [I] can also find help and encouragement through priesthood blessings, prayer, fasting, and attending the temple."

"The Savior can help [me] heal and change while surrounded by those who love [me]."

"As [I] travel the covenant path, sometimes [I] pick up [a stone] in [my shoe] in the form of poor habits, sins, or bad attitudes. The quicker [I] shake them from [my life], the more joyful [my] mortal journey will be."

Bad attitudes are something I really need to work on. 

"Maintaining change takes effort."

Scripture study is the critical part of this for me, it helps prayers and my repentance.

"I testify that because of Jesus Christ, [I] can change. [I] can adjust [my] habits, alter [my] thoughts, and refine [my] character to become more like [Jesus Christ]. And with His help, [I] can keep the change."

I do these things not of any worthiness of myself, but because of the worthiness that is in Christ. For "I know that I am nothing; as to my strength I am weak; therefore I will not boast of myself, but I will boast of my God, for in his strength I can do all things; yea, behold, many mighty miracles [have been] wrought in [my life], for which [I] will praise his name forever.", see Alma 26:12.

Moving Forward by Russell M. Nelson, October 2020 General Conference

These are the notes that I have record as I have listened to Elder Nelson opening talk:

Grateful for the technology that let us be connected as one world wide gathering of disciples of Jesus Christ.

The General Conference last April was viewed by more people than any conference preceding it and we have every expectation that that will happen again.

Global pandemic

raging wildfires

other natural disasters

have turned our world upside down

I grieve with each of you who have lost a loved one in this time and I pray for all who are currently suffering.

Meanwhile the work of the Lord is steadily moving forward amid social distancing, face masks, and Zoom meetings.

We have learned to do some things differently and even some things more effectively.

Unusual times can bring unusual rewards.

Our missionaries and mission leaders have been resourceful, resilient and truly remarkable. Although most missionaries have had to find new and create ways to do their work, some missions are doing more teaching than ever.

We had to close temples for a time and some construction projects were briefly delayed. But they are all now moving forward.

In the calendar year 2020, we will have broken ground for 20 new temples. Family history work has increased exponentially. Many new wards and stakes have been created. And we are gratified to report that the Church has provided pandemic humanitarian aid for 895 projects in 150 countries.

Increased gospel study in many homes is resulting in stronger testimonies and family relationships.

One mother wrote: We feel much closer to our children and grandchildren now that we gather on Zoom every Sunday. Each takes a turn on giving their thoughts on 'Come Follow Me'. Prayers for our family members have changed because we better understand what they need.

I pray that we as a people are using this unique time to grow spiritually. 

We are here on earth to be tested. To see if we will choose to follow Jesus Christ. To repent regularly, to learn and to progress. Our spirits long to progress and we do that best by staying firmly on the covenant path.

Through it all our Heavenly Father and His Son Jesus Christ, love us, They care for us, They and their holy angels are watching over us. I know that is true.

{And I feel that is true.}

As we gather to hear the words the Lord has inspirited His servants to deliver, I invite you to ponder a promise the Lord made. He declared that, whosoever will may lay hold upon the word of God, which is quick and powerful, which shall divide asunder all the cunny and the wiles of the devil and lead the disciple of Christ in a straight and narrow course. See Helaman 3:29.

I pray that you will choose to lay hold upon the word of God as it is declared during the General Conference. And I pray that you may feel the Lords perfect love for you

{ I feel it for me and those whom I serve.}

Stan's 190 General Conference Review: Saturday Morning Session, October 3, 2020

 There is so much to learn from General Conference and I don't feel like I am learning what I truly need to learn or obtaining the true benefits for the conference that my Father wants me to have. Therefore, in an effort to try to truly listen to and understand the servants for God, I am doing a review of this past conference. I am of hope that this review might be of some small benefit to my children, grandchildren, family, and those I love; however, the true desire and objective is that it is of benefit to me and that it changes me. This is my hope and my desire, so to that end I will be begin.

The Saturday Morning Session, begin October 3 at 10 AM EST. I was unable to listen as it happened, but have listen to this conference more than once. However, listen it to it several times is not what I truly need, I need to study it. So to this end I am writing down what I have been listening to.

The opening song was Hymn number 4, "Truth Eternal" by Parley P. Pratt, one of the original apostles that served with Joseph Smith and Brigham Young.  This is one of my favorite Hymns of the restoration and to me shows the profound understand that Elder Pratt had of the restoration.

This session of the conference was conducted by President Henry B. Eyring, second councilor in the First Presidency and was presided over by President Russell M. Nelson who as also the first speaker.

The next song song was Hymn number 72, "Praise to the Lord, the Almighty", this hymn was translated from another language. However, I know nothing about directly about those involved in its coming forth or coming into English. It is from the 1600 hundreds.

These songs had been sung at earlier conference and was lead by difference conductors and organist.

Elder Patrick Kirin gave the opening prayer

He prayed for those who feel marginalized or lost. He also prayed for civility in public life. He said, "...humbly acknowledge that the Gospel of Jesus Christ, joyfully lived, is the answer to all ills."

The first speaker of the conference, as mentioned earlier, was President Russell M. Nelson of the First Presidency of the Church.

His talk was "Moving Forward." Seems a very appropriate title for someone who is doing so much in their nineties.

First he talk about being "grateful for the technology" and I must agree, I also am amazed by the technology that made this conference possible and make it possible for me to study it in the way I am.

The next point that really catches my attention is his feeling for those who are suffering, particularly because of COVID-19.

He talk about the challenges and said that despite the difficulties, as a Church, we are moving forward.

This talk has a talk which I hope to learn both in Spanish and in English:

"Unusual time can bring unusual rewards."

I feel like this is for me. These are definitely some "unusual times" in my life which leads me to wonder what "unusual rewards" await?

"In the calendar year 2020, we will have broken ground for 20 new temples." This is a true sign that Church is healthy and growing, especially is ways that are spiritual.

"Increased gospel study in many homes is resulting in stronger testimonies and family relationships."

Do we have "increased gospel study in [our home]" and is this resulting in stronger testimonies and family relationships"? I don't think that my family fits the description that President Nelson gave in his talk. However, perhaps I can learn from their example and bring some of those blessing to my family.

He is praying that we will use this "unique time to grow spiritually." "We are here on earth to be tested to see if we will choose to follow Jesus Christ." We are to here to "repent regularly, to learn and to progress. He taught me that "[my spirit longs] to progress and [I] do that best by staying firmly on the covenant path." This is part of what I hope this review will do.

Thanks to his talk, I feel more that my "Heavenly Father and His Son Jesus Christ, love me. That is a sweet and much need blessing for me. I also feel "they are [caring] for me" and that "They and their holy angles are watching over [me]" and my family.

I am pondering a promise of the Lord that President Nelson shared, "whosoever will may lay hold upon the word of God, which is quick and powerful, which shall divide asunder all the cunny and the wiles of the devil and lead the disciple of Christ in a straight and narrow course." See Helaman 3:29.

I feel this is true and hope to "choose to lay hold upon the word of God as it is declared" in this conference and to "feel the Lords perfect love for [me]."

The Importance of Tests

He spent two decades helping "students learn how to learn for themselves." I have never thought of this as the "primary responsibility" of a teacher, but now that I hear it said in this way, it makes sense.

If "periodic tests absolutely are essential to learning," how does this apply in my personal, family, and professional life? What "effective [tests]" or standards do I need to "evaluate [my] learning and development" against.

A Wonderful 190 Semi Annual Conference for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

An absolutely amazing conference. I have been uplifted and inspired.

Really love the talk by the apostle Dale G. Renlund.

He talk about Micah 6:6-8, where Micah the prophet talks about thousands of rams sacrificed, or ten thousands of rivers of oil, or giving his first born to satisfy for his sins. But the Lord wants none of those things. The Lord wants us to "do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with God". Of ourselves we are not enough to answer for our sins, but when we "do justly" we keep the first two great commandments to love God and our fellow man (see Mark 12:30),  we come unto Christ and With Christ we are enough.

Elder Renlund talk about Christ teaching the Nephies about coming to Him with a broken heart and a contrite spirit (see 3 Nephi 12:19).

Brother Renlund talk about "joyfully repenting" and about how God loves mercy. I felt impressed that God extends that mercy to me and I need to "joyfully repent".

Elder Renlund told the story of Hillel the elder who was challenged by a student to explain the scriptures and torah while standing on one foot. Hillel answered the students chanllenge and while standing on one foot Hillel quoted from Deuteronomy 6:5, that we should "love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might". Then Hillel talk about not mistreating others and quoted from Leviticus 19:18 that we should "love thy neighbour as thyself" . I was impressed that we are to deal lovingly with one another. I believe this especially applies within our family. I believe we have an obligation as children to understand the gospel so we can share that with our parents and be more effective in communicating with them by the power of the Spirit.

Brother Renlund told about a doctor who gave an assignment to a young doctor to take care of a man who had made himself sick through alcoholism. When the young doctor complained that this was a difficult task for someone who had made themselves sick. The senior doctor said that the young doctor was there to heal and not to judge and that if she couldn't understand that she need to go somewhere else.

Elder Renlund talked about how Jesus cared for the people who others didn't want to care for, like sinners and publicans. People that offended the Pharisees and Sadducees of His day. He said that Christ was offended by their judging of others and that we should not judge anyone because of their race, sexual orientation, etc.

We should ask "I'm I doing enough?" and should act and not be paralyzed by fear. We are able to assess our own progress.

He then talk about the great blessings and ended by saying, "Don't you love it?".

I do love it and am very grateful for Elder Renlund's words.

To me this song captures some much of the simple truths what happened because of this vision.

This bring such joy to my heart, what a blessing. The blessing that flow from this vision reminds me of the what Christ said of Abraham, "...Abraham rejoiced to my day; and he saw it, and was glad."  (John 8:56).

I live in the day when the Gospel restore and we are preparing again for the coming of Christ. Like Abraham "[I rejoice] to see [this] day ... and [am] glad" see John 8:56.

This year I would like to start with my testimony of the Book of Mormon and see how that testimony changes and grows over the coming year.

I know that the Book of Mormon is a sacred volume of scripture comparable to the Bible and modern scriptures. It is alive in that it tailors itself to my needs and the purposes of God. This has happened again and again over many years. I know that as I feast upon the words of Christ it contains I will be blessed and strengthened by the Holy Ghost and the Spiritual knowledge I obtain. Over the last almost 50 years, the Book of Mormon has been my friend. It has guided me, protected me, encouraged, strengthened and supported me. It has enabled me to clearly see and escape the wiles of my adversary. It has lifted me when my heart has been filled with sorrows so great I could not bear them. And I have great hope to have such similar experiences in this coming year. I have been changed by this book and hoped to be changed even more in the coming years as I strive to listen to still small voice as it speaks to me while studying, pondering, and memorizing its words. I know the Book of Mormon is powerful because it is the words of Christ and a sincere study of it is accompanied by the witness and guidance of the Holy Ghost. That my heart will be changed in the coming year and that at the end of this year I can look back and see a profound and powerful change in my life and the lives of those I love.

There is much I can not explain and is outside of my understanding, but I would like to join my void with those righteous saints that it is true, powerful and live.

In the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

My Testimony of the Book of Mormon and Other Scriptures

Part of my testimony of the Book of Mormon is the precious truths I have found there over the years. The truths it and the other scriptures contain are like handcrafted lenses that enable me to see more clearly the world about me, especially see and understand the wiles of the devil. This is done for me in two ways: 1) these scriptural lenses help me understand and see the motives, tactics, and goals of the adversary and those who serve him and 2) to understand how God works, the motivates, approaches, and goals of God and those who serve Him.

Some would claim that these lenses or just pretty stones from some stream bed. But I know they are precious truths placed in my path as I read the scriptures and follow the direction of the Holy Ghost which guides me to them. Each of these spiritual lenses clarifies my understanding and spiritual vision. I know a man could not create something so incredible, complex, powerful and beautiful. To say these truths are simply my random thoughts is equivalent of find in a stream bed protected parts of a complete and working telescope and finding these pieces over years, often finding them in the same location I found other truths in the past. It would be like telling Lehi the Liahona was some random stone blown to his tent door by the desert wind. These truths are so clear, it astounds me that so many can’t see them. However, I also know that these truths must be seen through spiritual eyes. How Alma the elder saw a prophet (Mosiah 17:2) and Noah a mad man (Mosiah 13:1) is incomprehensible to me. The same as how someone could read the Book of Mormon and not know it is true. But its truth and beauty are also seen through spiritual eyes.

Therefore They Hushed Their Fears

In the last couple of days, I have been preparing for a visit to our stake or area from Elder David A. Bednar and have been reading through his past conference talks. This morning as I sat down to work, I felt stressed by so much that is going on in my life. I felt impressed to continue reading through Elder Bednar's past talks. I grab my tablet to see what talk was next and found that is was the talk from April 2015, Therefore They Hushed Their Fears. It is also interesting to note that the next chapter I will be reading is Mosiah 23, where the quote "Therefore they hushed their fears" is taken from.

Below are quotes from the talk that I have likened upon myself (see 1 Nephi 19:23).

A "[correct] knowledge of and faith in the Lord [empowers me] to hush [my] fears because Jesus Christ is the only source of enduring peace." This is why I must '[learn] of [Him], and listen to [His] words; walk in the meekness of [His] Spirit, that I might have peace in [Him]'" (D&C 19:23).

If I "[do] the works of righteousness", I "shall receive [my] reward, even peace in this world, and eternal life in the world to come" (D&C 59:23).

"The peace Christ gives allows [me] to view mortality through the precious perspective of eternity and supplies a spiritual settledness (see Colossians 1:23) that helps [me] maintain a consistent focus on [my] heavenly destination. Thus, [I] can be blessed to hush [my] fears because His doctrine provides purpose and direction in all aspects of [my life]. His ordinances and covenants fortify and comfort in times both good and bad. And His priesthood authority gives assurance that the things that matter most can endure both in time and in eternity."

"But can [I] hush the fears that so easily and frequently best [me] in [this] contemporary world? The answer to this question is an unequivocal yes. Three basic principles are central to receiving this blessing in [my life]: (1) look to Christ, (2) build upon the foundation of Christ, and (3) press forward with faith in Christ."

"[I] should look to and have [my] focus firmly fixed upon the Savior at all times and in all places."

"With [my] eyes fixed upon Jesus, [I step] out of the boat and miraculously [walk] on the water. Only when [my] gaze [is] diverted by the wind and the waves [do I] become afraid and begin to sink" see Matthew 14:27-31).

"[I] can be blessed to conquer [my] fears and strengthen [my] faith as [I] follow the Lord's instruction: 'Look unto me in every thought; doubt not, fear not'" (D&C 6:36).

I must "[remember that it is upon the rock of [my] Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that [I] must build [my] foundation; that when the devil shall send forth his mighty winds, yea, his shafts in the whirlwind, yea, when all his hail and his mighty storm shall beat up [me], it shall have no power over [me] to drag [me] down to the gulf of misery and endless wo, because of the rock upon which [I am] built, which is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if [I] build [I] cannot fall" (Helaman 5:12).

"[I] can be blessed to hush [my] fears as [I] firmly establish [my] desires and deeds upon the sure foundation of the Savior through [my] ordinances and covenants."

"The righteous fear I [need] encompasses a deep feeling of reverence, respect, and awe for the Lord Jesus Christ, obedience to His commandments, and anticipation of the Final Judgement and justice at His hand. [This], godly fear grows out of a correct understanding of the divine nature and mission of the Lord Jesus Christ, a willingness to submit [my] will to His will, and a knowledge that [I] will be accountable for [my] own sins in the Day of Judgment" (see D&C 101:78; Articles of Faith 1:2).

My "godly fear is linked inextricably to an understanding of the Final Judgment and [my] individual accountability for [my] desires, thoughts, words, and acts" (see Mosiah 4:30).

My "godly fear dispels mortal fears. It even subdues the haunting concern that [I] never can be good enough spiritually and never will measure up to the Lord's requirements and expectations. In truth, [I] cannot be good enough or measure up relying solely upon [my] own capacity and performance. [My] works and desires alone do not and cannot save [me]. 'After all [I] can do' (2 Nephi 25:23) [I am] made whole only through the mercy and grace available through the Savior's infinite and eternal atoning sacrifice."

How do I "Gather Together in One All Things in Christ"?

The following is my notes from studying Elder David A. Bednar talk from the October 2018 General Conference (see Gather Together in One All Things in Christ by Elder David A. Bednar
Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, October General Conference, 2018).

"[I] live in a remarkable and revelatory season of the restored Church of Jesus Christ."

When "[President Nelson urged me] to study [the conference] messages", what was his desire? See Becoming Exemplary Latter-day Saints by President Russell M. Nelson, October 2018 General Conference.

I believe it was that my "faith in the Father's plan and in the Savior's redeeming mission might increase ... and that God's everlasting covenant might be established" more fully in my life.

I believe his objective was "facilitate [my] continuing conversion to the Lord and [that I might] love more completely and server more effectively [my] brothers and sisters."

"[The] power of the Savior's gospel to transform and bless [me] flows from discerning and applying the interrelatedness of its doctrine, principles, and practices.  Only as [I] gather together in one all things in Christ, with firm focus upon Him, can gospel truths synergistically enable [me] to become what God desires [me] to become and endure valiantly to the end."

I know that "[in my] Savior [I] find joy.  And in Him [I] find the assurance of 'pease in this world, and eternal life in the world to come.'"

Five Things President Russell M. Nelson Ask Me To Do in the 2018 October General Conference

First:  “[He urge me] to study” the October Conference “messages”.  Telling me that [they] express the mind and the will of the Lord for His people, today."

Second: He counciled me to “unleash the power of [my family]” by “[transforming my] home into a sanctuary of faith” and “a center of gospel learning."

Third:  He ask me to “honor the Lord Jesus Christ every time [I] refer to His Church," which is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

Four:  Receive "the ongoing spiritual strengthening and tutoring that is possible only in the house of the Lord. And ... serve as proxy for [my ancestors]."

Five:  "[Feast] upon the word of the Lord and apply His teachings in [my] personal [life].

OCTOBER 2018 | Becoming Exemplary Latter-day Saints
